Day 12: India at Paris Olympics
There were many disappointments on Day 12 of the Paris 2024 Olympics, when none of the four medal events saw an Indian competitor finish on the podium.
Even after the snatch round, Mirabai Chanu was in the running for a medal, but she was unable to convert her heavier clean and jerk attempts. She only lost out on the bronze by 1 kg, and had to settle with fourth place.
While Vinesh Phogat’s dreams of creating history were dashed, Mirabai missed out on a possible bronze. She was disqualified from the wrestling tournament in Paris 2024 for being 100 grams overweight. She was scheduled to participate in the 50kg division final.
Avinash Sable placed a creditable 11th in the 3000m steeplechase, and Jyothi Yarraji advanced to the repechage round and now has another opportunity to qualify for the 100m hurdles semifinal.
Apart from the Sable and Yarraji, the day in Paris was a letdown for Indian athletics. Suraj Panwar and Priyanka Goswami failed to complete the marathon race walk mixed relay final earlier. Subsequently, Annu Rani (javelin throw), Sarvesh Kushare (high jump), Praveen Chithravel (triple jump), and Abdulla Aboobacker (triple jump) were unable to get past the qualification stage.
India’s campaign came to an end in the women’s team quarterfinal match, as they fell 3-1 to Germany in table tennis.
With Diksha Dagar finishing the first round in T7 and Aditi Ashok finishing T13 despite suffering from weariness from her flight from the US to Paris, there is optimism for India in the golf tournament.
Athletics: Avinash Sable’s steeplechase final medal attempt is unsuccessful
In the men’s 3000m steeplechase final at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Wednesday, Indian sensation Avinash Sable was ranked eleventh.
Sable, the current national record holder, raced the final at the Stade de France in 8:14.18. After 1000 meters, the defending Asian Games champion was fourth, but by 2000 meters, he had dropped out of the top 10 and was no longer in the lead group.
In the meantime, Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali successfully defended his Olympic title with a season-best time of 8:06.05.
Kenneth Brooks of the USA took silver with a personal best time of 8:06.41, followed in third place by Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya with a season-best time of 8:06.47.
Avinash Sable (IND) placed eleventh in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final, clocking in at 8:14.18.
